This is a song inspired by my struggles of over the years as what I define as a “Free Thinker”. These days especially, it seems more and more difficult to remain independent in thought and action. If you’re not a Republican you’re a Communist. If you’re not a Democrat, you’re a Nazi. Well….I’m an Independent in aspects of my life. Always have been…..I was born that way! It’s true!! I have found it to be very difficult over the years, and more so recently. With that said, I also believe that my country would be better off if there were more “Free Thinkers” out there, and fewer “Fox News” and “MSNBC” parrots.
‘nough said. Listen….that’s the key:-)
1ST VERSE
Well I grew up think'in that Jesus was everything,
Lord knows he gave it his all
So every third Sunday, if I had'ent been drink'in,
I'd answer the old church bell call
Well I'd sing hallelujah; and I'd pray on my knees,
I'd ask for forgiveness for all my bad deeds
Then one day out of nowhere as I pondered it all,
I found myself dance'in at the free thinker’s ball
CHOURS
Well you can waltz with the devil, you can kiss Buddha’s feet,
you can follow Joe Smith on a Mormon retreat.
You can sing "Hera Krishna", or you can dismiss it all,
when you come for a dance at the free thinker’s ball
2nd VERSE
Well I like my politics sunny-side up,
with a dash of conservatives and liberals on top
So I looked for a party but they were all too corrupt,
so I choose Independent and now I’m just stuck.
One side says tax while the other says borrow,
but both want to spend like there ain't no tomorrow.
When I find myself locked in that partisan brawl,
I go for a dance at the free thinks ball.
CHOURS
You can waltz with Carl Marx, have a beer with George Bush,
junior or senior it don't matter too much
Have a chat with Obama, you can learn from them all,
when you go for a dance at the free thinker’s ball.
3rd VERSE
When I say extremist we all tend to flinch,
its one of the great evils, it must top the list.
We think overseas, that we're safe here at home,
but just look around there ain't no sacred ground.
They won't come to the table, they won't find middle ground.
They thrive where fear and hatred abounds.
So when you don't understand why the country seems staled,
go for a dance at the free thinker’s ball.
CHOURS
You can waltz with Rush Limbaugh, have a cry with Glen Beck,
rant with Bill Myer until you're quite sick.
Beware of the dangers, and be done with it all,
when you go for a dance at the free thinker’s ball.
4th VERSE
I know some are offended by my free think'in ways;
they don't comprehend the need to find my own way.
I wish I could follow and let others decide;
I'd get fewer migraines, loose this pain in my side.
Well I've been called a commie and a socialist too.
I was once called a lesbian for the way that I choose.
But I was born with a brain, no matter how small.
It's what keeps me dance’in at the free thinker’s ball.
CHOURS
Well you can waltz with Tom Jefferson, see if Gandhi’s ok,
give a dollar to Sue Anthony and support her crusade.
If you take all the greats and put them all in a hall,
you'd find yourself dance'in at the free thinker’s ball.
